Welcome to the Adopt-a-Star Greyhound Rescue website. Adopt-a-Star is an adoption and rescue group located in Los Angeles. We place ex-racing greyhounds in homes throughout Los Angeles, Ventura and Orange Counties.
Adopt-a-Star Rescue is an active project of the Asher Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Adopt-a-Star primarily rescues greyhounds from Arizona; however, we will also help place from other areas of the country. We focus on placements primarily in Southen California; however, will ship to other areas and rescues as needed.
Greyhounds are one of the most loving and gentle creatures. They are in desperate need of adoption. They retire from the track faster than they can be placed in homes and many lose their lives.
Your generosity helps keep these magnificent creatures alive until we can get them placed in a loving home. Our adoption donations only cover about 1/2 of what it costs us to deliver a healthy vetted greyhound to its new home. The greyhounds need your support. Please consider even a small gift.
Adopt-a-Star's main goal is to place ex-racing greyhounds in loving homes. We perform home checks and interviews for all fosters and new parents. Adopt-a-Star delivers all dogs spayed or neutered, teeth professionally cleaned and with current shots. Records and the history of your new greyhound are also delivered at the time of adoption. Additionally we provide you with a copy of Retired Racing Greyhounds for Dummies, a martingale leash and collar and training tips. Many of our greyhounds also spend some time with foster families where they will be house-broken.
The Adopt-a-Star Rescue has been operating in Southern California for almost 10 years, and is a volunteer, non-profit organization providing information about and promoting the adoption of retired racing greyhounds. Our focus has been to place as many of these amazing dogs in loving homes as possible; however, we also have a focus on education and media - getting the word out about greyhounds and addressing some of the myths usually associated with the breed.
The Asher Foundation, Inc. d.b.a. Adopt-a-Star Rescue was founded in the fall of 2008. In the summer of 2009, The Asher Foundation assumed responsiblity of Adopt-a-Star Rescue, which has been operating in Southern California for nearly a decade. Founders, Robert & Natalie Corrao adopted their first greyhound in 2005 and second in 2006. Original Adopt-a-Star founder and good friend, Cliff Samuels passed the torch when he moved from Los Angeles to Florida. Adopt-a-Star has placed hundreds of greyhounds in the Los Angeles area and we hope to place hundreds more.
We welcome you to explore our site, learn more about retired racing greyhounds and consider either adopting or contributing financially. Your generocity helps save greyhounds. Please consider the difference you can make in someones life ...even if you don't adopt or don't want to have a greyhound in your home, donating even a small amount to Adopt-a-Star Rescue makes a big difference for both the greyhounds and the homes they bless. The costs associated with adoptions far exceed the donations we typically receive from the new family. We want to keep costs low to encourage those who do want to adopt...but that means we need your help.
